About Breast Revision

Breast revision surgery has become very common today. Many women feel that their breasts age by sagging and thus, they decide to undergo surgery. There are two kinds of breast revision or correction surgeries: breast lift surgery and breast reduction surgery.

A breast lift surgery is suitable for those women whose breasts have started sagging or descending due to breastfeeding and pregnancy. Breast reduction surgery, on the other hand, benefits those women who feel the need to reduce their breast size. Below is everything you need to know about breast revision surgery.

Breast revision surgery depends on each individual’s needs. The one thing that you will do before the actual surgery happens is sit down with your doctor and tell him what you are expecting out of this surgery. We will then suggest the right treatment for you and the best way to approach it.

For women whose breasts have started sagging, the doctors will go for a breast lift surgery wherein they will position your nipples and areolas higher on your breasts. For those whose breasts have grown in size and have started sagging, the doctors may recommend a breast reduction surgery with a lift. Though the recommendations may be the same, the procedure may vary slightly from person to person, depending on your needs and what is best for you.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Breast implant revision surgery may be right for you if you are experiencing:

  • Capsular contracture: Hardening or discomfort caused by scar tissue around the implant
  • Implant rupture or deflation: Visible changes in size or shape
  • Implant malposition: Implants that have shifted or sit unevenly
  • Asymmetry: A noticeable difference between the two breasts
  • Size dissatisfaction: Wanting to go larger, smaller, or switch implant type
  • Aging changes: Sagging or volume loss after pregnancy, weight shifts, or time

You should be in good general health, a non-smoker, and have realistic expectations about what revision can achieve.

More Information

The Breast Revision Procedure

The breast revision surgery will take about 2-3 hours, so you should plan to take at least four hours off your time in case it takes longer. The procedure for the breast revision surgery is as follows:

How We Perform Breast Lift Surgery

  1. Dr. Schuster will administer local anesthesia or sedatives, whichever is best for you, to reduce discomfort during surgery. This will help you get through the surgery without pain.
  2. He then makes incisions on your breasts. The most common incisions are around the areolas or around the areolas and vertically down from the areolas to the breast crease, and then horizontally along the breast crease. The incision will depend on the original shape of your breast and the look you are going for.
  3. After the incisions are made, the reshaping process will begin. The first thing Dr. Schuster will lift and reshape the underlying tissue of your breasts. This will give a better breast contour and firmness. Next, he will reposition the nipples and the areolas to a higher position. He then removes excess breast skin.
  4. Once the excess skin is removed and your breasts have attained the desired shape, he will tighten the skin around your breasts by closing the incisions.

How We Perform Breast Reduction Surgery

The first two steps of breast reduction surgery are the same as those for a breast lift surgery. After Dr. Schuster makes the incisions, he will use liposuction to remove excess fat, tissues, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. He will next reposition the nipples and areolas at a higher position, and once you achieve the desired shape, Dr. Schuster will close the incisions.

After the procedure, you will be back home with a light dressing or bandages on your incisions, and you will wear a special bra to support the healing process for about 2-3 weeks.

Things to remember

A lot of doubts come to our minds when we plan to get breast revision surgery. Some of the answers that you may be looking for are as follows:

  • Yes, your breasts will change shape as time passes, even after undergoing the surgery. The results will be long-lasting if you maintain your weight and have a healthy lifestyle.
  • There is no guarantee your breasts will look the way they did when you were younger.
  • The nipples will regain their sensation after the recovery period is over, although there is a slight risk of this when you go for a breast lift.

Breast revision surgery can be very helpful for you; if you are considering it, contact our well-qualified doctors.

What to Expect During Recovery

Most patients return home the same day and resume light activity within one to two weeks. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the first week or two. A surgical bra is worn for several weeks to support healing tissue.

Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for four to six weeks. Swelling gradually resolves over two to three months, with your final results becoming clearer as tissue settles. Dr. Schuster’s team provides detailed aftercare guidance every step of the way.

Benefits of Breast Revision Surgery

Breast revision surgery addresses a wide range of concerns, both physical and aesthetic. Patients commonly report improvements such as:

  • Relief from pain or discomfort from implant complications
  • A more natural, balanced breast appearance
  • Correction of asymmetry or implant malposition
  • Updated implants with safer, more current options
  • Improved shape when combined with a lift or reduction
  • Greater satisfaction with results from a prior corrective breast augmentation procedure

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need breast revision surgery?

Common signs include visible changes in implant shape, hardness, discomfort, or results you’re unhappy with from a previous surgery. A consultation with Dr. Schuster is the best way to assess your situation and explore your options.

Can breast revision fix capsular contracture?

Yes. Capsular contracture correction surgery removes or releases the hardened scar tissue around the implant. In most cases, the implant is replaced at the same time to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Will I need new implants during my revision?

Not always. Some revisions focus on tissue or implant positioning rather than the implants themselves. If your implants are older or have ruptured, breast implant replacement surgery is typically recommended as part of the procedure.

How long does breast revision surgery take?

Most procedures take 2-4 hours, depending on the complexity involved. Dr. Schuster will walk you through the expected timeline during your consultation so you can plan accordingly.

How long do breast revision results last?

Results are generally long-lasting, especially with a stable weight and consistent follow-up care. Keep in mind that natural aging, hormonal changes, and weight fluctuations can affect breast tissue over time.
