Abdominoplasty Q&A
What is abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to refine the contours of your abdomen. This procedure is customizable, allowing Dr. Schuster to use a combination of surgical skills to give you the stomach of your dreams. A tummy tuck is often combined with other procedures, an approach that makes the most of your valuable time and money. Abdominoplasty is a common part of a Mommy Makeover, a group of surgical procedures that help restore a woman’s body after pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
How is an abdominoplasty performed?
You’ll rest under general anesthesia throughout the process and wake up with your new abdominal profile. Dr. Schuster begins by making an incision to access your abdominal tissues. The incision is usually made below your belly button along the pubic hairline.
A separate incision around your belly button allows Dr. Schuster to reposition your navel at the end of the procedure. He then focuses on removing excess skin and fat in your abdomen. If needed, he also tightens your abdominal muscles to create a more toned and flat stomach.
Once he’s happy with the contouring, Dr. Schuster redrapes your skin over your sculpted abdominal tissues, stitches your belly button into place, then closes the main incision.
What can I expect after abdominoplasty?
Once the anesthesia wears off and you’re cleared for discharge, you’ll return home for a period of rest. It’s important to take time to let your body heal after your tummy tuck.
Moderate pain is normal after an abdominoplasty, but you’ll receive medications to control discomfort. It’s important to adhere to all post-surgical instructions to ease the healing process.
Expect to avoid strenuous activities for around six weeks, although you’ll be able to return to most normal daily activities much sooner. You’ll be able to see some of the results of your procedure in the first few days, but the full results won’t be apparent until the swelling fully subsides, which can take a few weeks depending on how your body adjusts after surgery.
