More Information

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the size and shape of your nose. It’s also one of the most common types of cosmetic surgery in the nation. Rather than focusing on making the nose simply “smaller,” the goal is to create proportion between the nose, chin, cheeks, and overall facial profile.

Commonly called a nose job, rhinoplasty can achieve the following results:

  • Create a smaller nose
  • Restore proper balance with the rest of your features
  • Correct nasal asymmetry
  • Alter a nose profile with humps or depressions
  • Reduce the width of your nose at the bridge
  • Correct a nasal tip that is bulbous, enlarged, upturned, or drooping

Not all rhinoplasty procedures are done for cosmetic purposes. Some men and women have a deviated septum that interferes with normal breathing. In these cases, a rhinoplasty may be covered by your health insurance.

At Schuster Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty is approached as both a technical and aesthetic procedure. Each plan takes into account bone structure, cartilage strength, skin thickness, and how the nose complements your unique facial features. This level of planning helps avoid overcorrection and supports the creation of natural-looking outcomes.

Who Is Rhinoplasty For?

Rhinoplasty may be a good option if you feel your nose draws attention away from other facial features. Common concerns include a dorsal hump, nasal width, tip shape, asymmetry, or structural issues that affect breathing.

Patients seek rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, functional improvement, or both. During consultation, your goals are discussed in detail to determine whether surgical reshaping, structural support, or combined treatment is appropriate.

What Happens Before and During the Treatment

Before surgery

Your experience begins with a detailed consultation focused on facial balance, nasal structure, and personal goals. Advanced Vectra 3D Imaging may be used to preview potential refinements and guide surgical planning with clarity. This planning phase helps align expectations and supports precise decision-making before surgery.

Day of surgery

Rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure, either in the practice’s private, in-house surgical suite or in a hospital setting, based on your needs.  Anesthesia ensures you’re able to rest comfortably while Dr. Schuster or Dr. Kovacs performs your surgery. Once the medication takes effect, he begins by making incisions inside your nose or across the strip of tissue between your nostrils, depending on the type of adjustments being made.

We gently lift the skin and remove the bone or cartilage necessary to improve the shape of your nose. If you need to add volume to your nose, cartilage is often transferred from your ear or a section of your ribs. If a deviated septum is present, we straighten the tissue and ensure there is no obstruction to your breathing.

Once you’re pleased with the results, we close the incisions and bandage the area. You’ll need to keep any splints, gauze, or packing materials in place for a few days as the healing process begins.

Surgical approach

Rhinoplasty is not performed using a single technique. The surgical approach is selected based on your anatomy, goals, and any prior nasal surgery.

Primary rhinoplasty

Primary rhinoplasty is performed on patients who have not had prior nose surgery. Planning focuses on refining shape and structure while preserving support to maintain long-term stability and facial balance.

Open rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty allows direct access to nasal structures through a small incision along the natural tissue between the nostrils. This approach is often chosen for complex reshaping where precise visibility and control are required.

Closed rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty involves placing incisions inside the nose, resulting in no visible external marks. It may be appropriate for patients who need more limited refinement while still maintaining natural contour and proportion.

Revision rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty addresses concerns from previous nasal surgery and often involves scar tissue or weakened support. These cases require advanced planning and careful selection of techniques to restore balance and function.

Selecting the correct approach is key to achieving balanced, stable results.

The process begins with a one-on-one consultation, so call or schedule your visit online today.

Rhinoplasty Recovery and Results

Early recovery

After surgery, the nose is protected with bandaging or a splint to support early healing and recovery. Swelling and congestion are expected during the initial recovery period. Most patients take about one to two weeks away from work or social activities.

Long-term results

Swelling continues to improve gradually over several months. While early changes are noticeable within weeks, final refinement may take up to a year as the nasal tissues settle. Once healing is complete, rhinoplasty results are long-lasting.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty offers both aesthetic and structural benefits when carefully planned. While every result is unique, common advantages include:

  • Improved facial balance and proportion
  • Smoother nasal contours and refined definition
  • Structural correction that may support better airflow
  • Long-lasting results once healing is complete

These benefits are best appreciated when rhinoplasty is planned with the entire face in mind, rather than focusing solely on the nose.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty

Will I have black eyes after rhinoplasty?

Some patients experience bruising around the eyes during the first week after surgery. This improvement is gradual, and many patients feel comfortable returning to work or social activities within one to two weeks.

Can you fix my breathing and my nasal bump at the same time?

Yes. Rhinoplasty can be combined with the correction of a deviated septum to improve airflow while also refining nasal shape. This approach allows both functional and cosmetic concerns to be addressed during a single procedure when appropriate.

How long will my nose look swollen after surgery?

Swelling is expected during early recovery and improves steadily over the first several weeks. Subtle refinement, especially at the nasal tip, may continue for several months as healing progresses.

How long does rhinoplasty take to perform?

Rhinoplasty length depends on the type of correction and whether structural or breathing concerns are addressed. Most procedures are completed within a few hours as an outpatient surgery, with careful attention to detail throughout.

Will my results look natural or obvious?

Rhinoplasty is planned to support facial balance rather than draw attention to the nose itself. The goal is subtle refinement that fits your features, so changes appear natural once swelling has resolved.
