Liposuction Q&A

Why can I not lose fat in certain areas of my body?

Stubborn fatty deposits can be frustrating, and to understand why these trouble spots occur, it helps to think about how your body stores and uses fat. Every time you eat, your body converts a portion of those nutrients into fat, which acts as a reservoir of stored energy.

When you burn more calories than you consume, your body turns to those fat stores. This is a constant ebb and flow, and each fat cell has the ability to expand or contract to accommodate varying volumes of fat.

You can reduce your total amount of fat, but it isn’t possible to target certain areas of your body. Everyone stores fat differently, and that can make it hard to lose excess fat in specific areas.

What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat from your body using suction. This is a great way to improve the appearance of trouble areas including:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Upper Arms

You can even treat more than one area during the same procedure.

How does liposuction work?

Dr. Schuster administers a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. He then creates small incisions to guide the treatment wand to the targeted area. That wand delivers ultrasonic energy, which destroys the fat cell walls and liquifies the stored fat.

The next step is to remove that fat through suction. The liquified fat travels through a thin surgical tube called a cannula. Once the proper amount of fat has been removed, Dr. Schuster removes the surgical tools and closes the small incisions.

You should try to take a few days off to recover, but you’ll be back in the swing of your normal routines within a week. Getting daily mild exercise helps speed the recovery process and prevents blood clots from developing. Within a couple of weeks, the swelling will subside, and you’ll begin to see the effects of your liposuction procedure.

If you’re ready to take the next step toward the body you deserve, call or book an appointment at Schuster Plastic Surgery online. You’ll learn more about how liposuction can help you move closer to your body contouring goals and find answers to any lingering questions you may have.
