The Basics – Injectable Treatments

Women and men, usually between the ages of 35 and 75, choose injectable treatments to improve their facial appearance with minimal recovery time. At Schuster Plastic Surgery in Boca Raton we offer BOTOX Cosmetic and a wide range of injectable fillers.

BOTOX Cosmetic treats "dynamic" facial wrinkles that form as horizontal lines across the forehead, vertical creases between the eyebrows, and crow's feet on the outside corners of the eyes. Dynamic wrinkles form on the face over time from repeated muscle movement. The active ingredient in BOTOX Cosmetic smoothes wrinkles by relaxing these facial muscles. Results usually last three to four months before retreatment is necessary.

Injectable fillers sculpt and plump lips, soften facial wrinkles, and fill in certain scars. Our modern medical spa suite offers a diverse selection of injectable fillers that add volume and smooth away wrinkles without surgery - usually in less than an hour. You can choose from the following dermal fillers:

  • Restylane®, Perlane®, and JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel are made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body. Dr. Schuster uses these fillers to enhance lip volume and fill and smooth nasolabial folds, marionette lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. The results can last six months or more.
  • Radiesse® is made with calcium hydroxyapatite, a mineral-like compound found naturally in human bones. This product effectively fills deeper wrinkles, erases nasolabial folds, and smoothes over recessed scars. Results can last a year or more. Radiesse is not recommended for lips because of larger particles can cause lumpiness.

Your Procedure, Your New Look

Dr. Schuster administers BOTOX Cosmetic and other injectable fillers in his office, usually without anesthesia. He may apply a numbing cream to the treatment area or use a local anesthetic to assure your comfort. Patients are usually in and out of the office in under an hour. With BOTOX Cosmetic, Dr. Schuster will select various injection points based on the area that requires treatment. These points may not be on the wrinkle itself, but instead where the associated muscle contracts. Results following BOTOX Cosmetic treatment usually will begin to reveal themselves within one week.

Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Schuster might recommend additional or alternative facial rejuvenation procedures. You might benefit from other medical spa services such as microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, or a chemical peel. In more advanced cases, Dr. Schuster might recommend surgical facial sculpting procedures, such as a Boca Raton facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery.

Consultations for BOTOX Cosmetic or other injectable treatments are usually very straightforward. I will want to ensure that the treatment you are considering is the right one for you. Here are a few common questions I get about BOTOX Cosmetic and injectable fillers in my Boca Raton plastic surgery office.

Will my results be permanent?

Although injectable treatments are long lasting, they are not permanent. The youthful appearance from BOTOX Cosmetic should last about three to four months, at which time you will need a touch-up treatment to keep wrinkles away. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid last approximately six to nine months depending upon the areas treated. Calcium-based Radiesse has been found to last up to a year or longer. Of course, results will vary between patients with all of these treatments.

What is the recovery time?

You should be able to resume normal activities immediately after your treatment. Try to avoid putting pressure on the treated areas or lying down for the first four to five hours after treatment to prevent the BOTOX Cosmetic from migrating to other areas of your face. Also, avoid strenuous activity for the first day.
