"It's as plain as the nose on your face." That's probably not a compliment to you. You don't have to live with your nose just because you were born with it. Many women and men gain self-confidence and satisfaction in their facial appearance, or simply breather easier, by choosing nose surgery in Boca Raton.

Dr. Steven Schuster, with over two decades of surgical experience, offers FREE consultations in his Boca Raton office. He will take the time to understand what concerns you about your nose, answer your personal questions, and educate you on the benefits and limitations of nose surgery.

The Basics – Nose Surgery in Boca Raton

Nose surgery, technically known as rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the nose. It also corrects functional defects (those you were born with) as well those caused by accidents or injuries. Rhinoplasty is appropriate for healthy adults of all ages, as well as teens, as long as their facial growth is complete and their expectations are realistic.

Aesthetic nose surgery can effectively correct a nose that:

  • Appears out of proportion with the face
  • Has a bump or depression on the nasal bridge
  • Seems too wide
  • Has a thickened, enlarged, or drooping nasal tip
  • Has excessively flared nostrils
  • Is off center, crooked, or asymmetrical

Functional nose surgery corrects certain breathing problems related to the internal structure of the nose, such as a deviated septum. Because rhinoplasty may be considered reconstructive in some cases, your medical insurance may cover a portion of the cost of the procedure. Talk with Dr. Schuster, one of the more experienced plastic surgeons in Boca Raton, Florida, to learn more about whether your case is a good one for insurance coverage and how to obtain pre-authorization from your medical insurance company.

Many of Dr. Schuster's patients elect to combine their nose surgery with other facial sculpting procedures such as eyelid surgery, cheek & chin implants or facelift in Boca Raton for more comprehensive aesthetic improvement.

Your Procedure, Your New Look

Most nose surgery procedures take about one to two hours to perform. Dr. Schuster performs this procedure using either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on the goals of your nose surgery, he performs:

  • Closed rhinoplasty, where he conceals the incisions inside the nostrils
  • Open rhinoplasty, where he makes a tiny, inconspicuous incision across the skin between the nostrils (the columella)

After making the initial incision, Dr. Schuster separates soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures and reshapes the cartilage and bone. When straightening a nose or making it more narrow, he might need to change the position of certain bones. Alternatively, he can build up your nose using nasal cartilage, bone, or cartilage from another area of your body. After he completes the procedure, Dr. Schuster places a splint over your nose and occasionally uses an internal splint made of a soft plastic to maintain and support its new shape while healing.

Dr. Schuster aims to transform the nose you are dissatisfied with into a more beautiful, very natural result with nose surgery in Boca Raton. He will work together with you to arrive at the best facial sculpting combination for the improvements you desire.

Here are a few common questions I am asked about nose surgery in Boca Raton.

How long is the recovery period after rhinoplasty?

The recovery period for nose surgery varies greatly among patients. I recommend that you have someone drive you home the day of your procedure. Make sure they are available to help you out for a few days afterwards, when the discomfort and swelling are the most pronounced. The first couple of days after surgery, you should restrict your activities and sleep with your head elevated to minimize swelling and reduce minor bleeding. You will usually be able to return to work in about a week to ten days after surgery, even though swelling and bruising may last for about two weeks. I will remove the splint, stitches, and packing within about seven days after surgery. You can usually resume most normal activities within three weeks.

Will I get permanent results with nose surgery?

The results of nose surgery are permanent. Since the healing process is gradual, be prepared to wait up to a year to realize the final results of your nose surgery. However, it's very likely that you will appreciate your new look within a just few weeks of your surgery.

Can I see the way my nose will look after surgery?

Most people are very nervous about the way their nose will look after surgery. I use digital imaging to help my patients understand what I am trying to do and to help me understand what they would like in the appearance of their nose. Computer imaging also helps shape a patient's understanding of my limitations and what I can't achieve. It is important to realize this is a simulation and not any guarantee of what a nose will look like, as there are many factors that contribute to the final result.

Are there any special considerations I might need to make after nose surgery?

You will need to wait a few months before exposing your sculpted nose to direct sunlight. Your nose will be sensitive during the healing process, so you must be meticulous about protecting it with sun-block. If you had the bones of your nose sculpted, you may need to wait several weeks before wearing glasses without special support such as tape to keep pressure off of your nose.
