Boca Raton Eyelid Surgery
Do your eyes detract from the look of your face, making you appear old, tired, and worn out? Over time upper eyelids droop and sag, sometimes even impairing your peripheral vision. Lower eyelids puff out with bags and dark circles. Many women and men regain that youthful, refreshed look in Boca Raton with eyelid surgery. In 2007, eyelid surgery was a top 5 cosmetic surgery procedure for both women and men according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
You can visit board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Schuster when you request a FREE consultation in his Boca Raton office to find out if eyelid surgery can improve your look. Dr. Schuster listens to your concerns and gives you the information you need to decide whether eyelid surgery is the right plastic surgery option in Boca Raton for you.
The Basics – Boca Raton Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, technically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, making you look younger and more rested. Adults of all ages choose eyelid surgery from their plastic surgeons in Boca Raton, Florida for both aesthetic and functional improvements.
Aesthetic eyelid surgery effectively corrects:
- Loose skin and fine wrinkles on the upper and lower eyelids that make you look older
- Fatty deposits on the upper and lower eyelids that make eyes look puffy
- Bags under the eyes that make you seem tired or unhappy
- Droopy lower eyelids
Eyelid surgery also can restore peripheral vision impaired by loose, sagging eyelids. Since this procedure restores obstructed vision, in some cases insurance companies may provide coverage for a portion of the cost of eyelid surgery. Many of Dr. Schuster's patients elect to complete their facial rejuvenation by combining eyelid surgery with a brow lift, nose surgery, or a facelift in Boca Raton.
Your Procedure, Your New Look
Dr. Schuster performs eyelid surgery using either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia using only board certified anesthesiologists. For upper eyelid surgery, he usually makes the incisions within the natural crease of the upper lids, and removes excess skin and fatty tissue. For the lower eyelids, Dr. Schuster often makes the incisions just below the lower eyelashes. He removes excess skin, muscle, and fat, and sometimes redistributes lower eyelid fat to resolve under-eye bags. Alternatively, Dr. Schuster might decide that the best approach for removing excess lower eyelid fat is by making an incision inside the lower eyelid. While this method leaves no external incision, he cannot use it to remove excess skin and may opt to use laser resurfacing to tighten and smooth the skin.
Your satisfaction with your look is Dr. Schuster's top priority when he performs Boca Raton eyelid surgery. Because of individual factors, the results from eyelid surgery will ultimately vary from person to person. Dr. Schuster will work with you to determine which surgical technique will produce the best results for you.
Dr. Schuster Answers Your Questions
Choosing plastic surgery - especially facial plastic surgery - is a big decision in anyone's life. I look forward to meeting you and answering your eyelid surgery questions at your consultation appointment. Here are some questions I am commonly asked from patients considering this procedure.
How long will the results from my Boca Raton eyelid surgery last?
Most patients are pleased with the results of their eyelid surgery for many years. The fat I remove to decrease eyelid puffiness usually does not return. While eyelid surgery improvements are long lasting, factors such as the aging process and your lifestyle choices (exercise, diet, smoking, etc.) can negatively affect them. Sometimes having eyelid surgery gives patients the confidence to make additional improvements in the future.
Will eyelid surgery leave noticeable scars?
I make the blepharoplasty incisions in areas around the eyes best suited to conceal any scarring. For the upper eyelids, I make the incisions in the crease of the eyelid. These scars are usually hidden when your eyes are open. For the lower eyelids, I make the incisions are just below the eyelash line where they are barely noticeable. For some patients, I can correct under-eye bags through transconjunctival (inside the eyelid) surgery, in which I can remove only fat, not skin.
Will eyelid surgery alone correct all my concerns about my eye area appearance?
Not always. A Boca Raton eyelid surgery procedure may be just one part of a complete eye rejuvenation solution. If your eyebrows and your upper eyelids sag, I might recommend a brow lift in addition to eyelid surgery. If you have wrinkles in the outer corners of your eyes ("crow's feet"), you might benefit from one of our non-surgical medical spa services like BOTOX® Cosmetic or Thermage®. We can use a chemical peel or bleaching solution to lighten under eye circles caused by dark pigmentation. And some patients need laser to tighten the skin and remove wrinkles. It is important that you clearly discuss your desires and expectations with me, prior to undergoing any cosmetic surgery procedures.
How long is the recovery period?
If you are a physically healthy non-smoker, the recovery period for eyelid surgery is minimal, usually 10 days or less. You can expect swelling and bruising around your eyes for about a week after the surgery. After the initial recovery period, I will usually allow you to resume normal activities. You should wait at least two weeks before engaging in any strenuous activities such as straining, bending, and lifting. Also, avoid wearing contact lenses for at least two weeks.
